From Sydney to Lausanne: Expanding My AI Horizons at IMD’s Global Network Week

As a consulting engineer navigating the fast-paced world of digital transformation and an Executive MBA student at UNSW, I developed a deep interest in digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence and generative AI applications. I’ve taken two electives in this space during my MBA study, and I am eager to understand how these technologies are transforming businesses. However, I knew that to grasp the global implications of AI truly, I needed to connect with a diverse network of professionals and learn from experts; hence, I was thrilled to participate in the Global Network Week at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland. This immersive five-day program, focusing on Digital Business Transformation best practices with a specific emphasis on AI, was an incredible experience that broadened my horizons and provided invaluable insights.

A Deep Dive into Digital Business Transformation: Demystifying the Hype

The program began by demystifying the concept of digital business transformation. IMD Professor Oyku Isik, a leading Digital Strategy and Cybersecurity expert, emphasized that digital transformation is not simply digitization or digitalization. It’s a fundamental shift in mindset on how organizations and businesses operate, driven by a combination of technology, data, and a strategic business model. This clarified a common misconception in many organizations, where the terms are often interchangeable.

Unlocking the Power of Data and AI

From the outset, the program emphasized the critical role of data in driving digital transformation. We explored the various digital technologies shaping the landscape, including AI and Data Analytics, Intelligent Robotics, IoT, and Blockchain. Case studies from leading companies like Kajima Corporation, Hilti, and Rio Tinto, showcasing their innovative use of IoT for automation and data-driven decision-making in construction sites, were particularly inspiring for someone in my field.

The program also looked into AI’s crucial role in driving value creation. Professor Isik presented a compelling case for how companies like Nike and L’Oréal leverage data analytics and AI to personalize customer experiences, increasing sales and revenue. This reinforced the idea that AI is not just about automation but creating personalized and engaging customer interactions.

Beyond the Classroom: Learning from the Olympic Games

A highlight of the program was a visit to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters. The Digital Team, responsible for the digital strategy for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, shared their insights into leveraging data and technology to enhance the Olympic experience for athletes, spectators, and stakeholders. This real-world case study demonstrated how digital transformation is vital for even the most traditional institutions, showcasing how data analytics help business decision-making, improve marketing efforts and create engaging content for a global audience.

A Framework for Strategic Digital Transformation

Professor Mohan Subramaniam, IMD’s Strategy and Digital Transformation Professor, provided a valuable framework for understanding on the impact of digital transformation on businesses and drive competitive advantages. His 4-Tier Framework outlined different levels of data utilization, from improving operational efficiencies to creating new business models. This framework, categorized into Production and Consumption Ecosystems, offered a practical approach to selecting the right digital strategy based on an organization’s goals and resources. He also delivered a line saying, “Features Tell, Benefits Sell, Outcomes Compel”, which I think is thought-provoking, especially when you are involved in implementing digital strategy.

IMD’s AI Journey: A Vision for the Future of Learning

IMD’s Chief Learning Innovation Officer Sarah Toms shared a vision for integrating AI into the learning experience. Her concept of using IMD’s data sources to develop a custom ChatGPT-like AI tool for learners was particularly intriguing. This demonstrated how AI can personalize learning, provide interactive feedback, and enhance accessibility to knowledge, even after class sessions. For me, this shows how AI can revolutionize education and empower learners.

Leading Digital Transformation: The Importance of People and Culture

Professor Jennifer Jordan, IMD’s Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Professor, session on Leading Digital Business Transformation emphasized the vital role of leadership and leadership archetypes in driving change. Her insights highlighted the importance of establishing a clear vision, communicating effectively, and building buy-in from the entire team. The case study on Havas demonstrated the challenges of leading, guiding and transforming a company through a digital transformation, showcasing the importance of fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. The case study also illustrated the challenges and strategies for navigating change in a fast-paced technological environment.

Communicating with Impact

Heather Cairns-Lee’s no-slide deck session proved to be a hit. She engaged the cohort despite the Group Presentations coming up after her session. Her framework for delivering presentations gave me some tips to work on, such as arranging my thought process into a Why-Who-What-How format, which improves my communication style. She also emphasized the importance of breathing and pausing to self-regulate and release the tension built up when making presentations.

Cybersecurity and Corporate Responsibility: A New Era of AI Ethics

Professor Isik’s final session focused on the future of generative AI in business, cybersecurity, governance, and corporate responsibility in the age of AI. This timely discussion was a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with AI, from data breaches and security incidents to the ethical implications of bias and transparency and the importance of cybersecurity in digital transformation. We had a group simulation exercise on cybersecurity for LM Energy, which showed how company processes such as incident response plans, cybersecurity guard rails, and communication are all critical components to address cybersecurity issues.

Networking and Cultural Immersion

Beyond the classroom, the program offered exceptional networking opportunities. The Master Chef Group Challenge, a collaborative project with fellow participants from diverse industries and backgrounds, was a highlight. This challenge allowed us to work together, learn from each other’s perspectives, and build lasting connections. The group presentation to the IOC provided further networking opportunities, where we learned how to communicate and present complex ideas to a diverse audience effectively.

The cultural immersion in Lausanne was equally enriching. The vibrant city, the picturesque Swiss landscape, and the opportunity to connect with professionals worldwide deepened my understanding of AI’s global perspectives and implications.

IMD: A World-Class Experience

The IMD Learning team, led by Nikko Virgilio and Gabriela Benites Grabowska, created a supportive and engaging learning environment. Their personalised attention, the well-designed classroom setting, and the mix of speakers and activities contributed to a truly valuable and enriching experience. I find Gabriela’s 15-minute wellness sessions of Pilates and breathing exercises really helpful in setting a healthy mindset and well-being prior to the class sessions. Nikko’s attentiveness or responsiveness to the cohort’s request occasionally also demonstrated IMD’s commitment to supporting the students during the program.

Looking Forward

The Global Network Week at IMD has profoundly impacted my journey. The knowledge and connections gained have given me a deeper understanding of AI’s complex and dynamic world, equipping me with valuable tools and perspectives for my career and personal development. I am confident that this experience will continue to shape my approach to the future of AI, empowering me to contribute meaningfully to the evolving technological landscape.

I hope this experience provides valuable insight into the program.
